Senior Roundtable with City of San Jose Leaders

On Tuesday, February 21st, the Aging Services Collaborative (ASC) hosted a Senior Roundtable with a panel featuring four City of San Jose Leaders. The roundtable was an opportunity to have a dialogue about senior issues with key City Department leaders and Budget Directors.

The session began with a brief summary of the demographics of the seniors within Santa Clara County. ASC members highlighted poverty among seniors, growth projections for the local senior population and health conditions affecting seniors.

Angel Rios, Jr, Director of the Parks, Recreation & Neighborhood Services Department, and Mary O’Meara, Recreation Superintendent shared the City’s Age-Friendly framework and the need to foster innovative partnerships to serving the growing senior population in San Jose.

James Stagi, Grants and Neighborhood Programs Administrator for the Housing Department gave an update about Community Development Block Grant funding for senior services, which will fund programs in food and nutrition, shared housing and transportation.

Lee Wilcox, Director of Budget and Finance for Mayor Sam Liccardo provided an overview of the City Budget and expressed his desires to bring more funding to seniors and their needs within the city.

We concluded the session with questions from ASC members who reinforced the desire to return to senior service funding levels that the City had before the recession to support a more robust array of senior programs and services. The ASC was proud to host this meeting and is excited to partner with the City to serve our seniors.
